IMD forecasts a sharp drop in night temperatures as northern winds return to the region.

Pune is gearing up for a chilly end to the year as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the return of cold wave conditions. Starting December 30, the city and its surrounding areas could see single-digit night temperatures, with clear skies expected to aid the cooling process.

Currently, Pune is experiencing minimum temperatures of around 16°C, while daytime highs hover between 26°C and 27°C. However, the impending northerly winds from the Western Himalayas are expected to bring a significant drop in night temperatures as they penetrate into Maharashtra.

Rain and Thunderstorm Activity Precedes Cold Spell

As per news reports, Anupam Kashyapi, former head of Weather Forecasting at IMD, stated that the transition will be marked by rain and thunderstorms in Pune and neighboring districts due to opposing wind interactions from December 26. Skies are likely to clear by December 29, paving the way for the cold wave.

Parts of Pune district, including NDA, have already experienced some of the lowest temperatures this season, with readings as low as 6°C reported earlier in November and December.

Mixed Winter for Pune

So far, Pune’s winter has been a blend of warm and cold spells. IMD initially forecasted a warmer-than-usual winter with higher-than-average minimum temperatures. However, single-digit temperatures were recorded during November’s last week and the second week of December, indicating intermittent cold waves.

Rainfall Alert in Maharashtra

The IMD has issued a yellow-to-orange alert for rainfall in four districts: Nashik, Ahmednagar, Dhule, and Jalgaon. Moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected in isolated areas on December 27. Farmers have been cautioned about potential crop and livestock impacts due to the rainfall over the next 48 hours.

New Year Weather Outlook

As the moisture influx from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea subsides, Pune’s cloudy skies are expected to clear by the end of December. With the arrival of cold northern winds, the city is likely to ring in 2025 under a clear sky with biting cold nights, marking a quintessential winter conclusion.
