Construction delay for Pune Metro Swargate-Katraj extension

Pune Metro Extends Service Hours to 11 PM from Republic Day, Adds More Late-Night Trips
Nearly four months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Pune Metro’s Swargate-Katraj extension, construction work is yet to start. The Pune Metro authority is in the final stages of selecting an agency for the project.
As per information, the extension will include 5.463 km of twin tunnels and four underground stations. The project was approved in 2021 at an estimated cost of ₹2,945 crore. Initially, it included three stations—Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj. However, a fourth station at Balaji Nagar was added recently, following public demand and civic body approval.
A single agency will be tasked with constructing the underground route and four stations between Swargate and Katraj. The project will use specialized tunneling technology, including a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Officials expect construction to proceed rapidly once it begins.
The Pune Metro’s first phase, including the Vanaz-Ramwadi and Pimpri Chinchwad-Swargate routes, is now fully operational. The underground section from Shivajinagar to Swargate, opened in September 2024, highlights the Metro’s ability to operate in congested urban areas.
Work is also progressing on the elevated Pimpri Chinchwad-Nigdi extension. Pune Metro awaits approval for its second phase, which will connect Khadakwasla to Kharadi via Swargate and Hadapsar. This phase will link to the existing network at SNDT College Station.
Despite the delays, officials remain optimistic about accelerating construction once the contractor is finalized.
