A 21-year-old resident of Mumbra in Thane has died due to suspected COVID-19 complications, raising fresh concerns about a resurgence of the virus in Maharashtra. The youth was admitted to Kalwa Hospital on May 12, 2025, and his COVID-19 infection was confirmed on May 23. He passed away the following day. Health officials believe coronavirus was the likely cause of death.

The state also reported another COVID-related fatality in Mumbai on Friday, along with 35 new cases in the past 24 hours. Two earlier deaths were reported at KEM Hospital. Maharashtra has seen 177 COVID-19 cases over the last month.

On a global scale, the virus is witnessing a new wave, with Singapore and Hong Kong together reporting over 14,000 active cases and several fatalities. Experts attribute the spike to growing international travel and reduced caution regarding quarantine.
