COVID-19 Spike in Pune: 108 Cases Reported in May, Most Show Mild Symptoms
Pune Reports 108 COVID-19 Cases in May 2025, Officials Say Situation Under Control
Pune: The city has witnessed a notable rise in COVID-19 infections, with 108 new cases reported in May 2025 — the highest monthly tally this year, according to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The surge has raised public health concerns, although officials maintain that the situation remains manageable.
Until April this year, Pune had recorded only three cases — one each in January, March, and April. However, May saw a sudden escalation, bringing the cumulative total since January to 121 cases. As of Monday, there are 94 active cases in the city. Of these, 84 patients are recovering under home isolation while 10 are hospitalised.
On Monday alone, 13 fresh cases were reported and eight patients were discharged after treatment.
PMC health chief Dr Nina Borade urged residents to remain calm, attributing the rise to an increase in COVID testing. “Earlier, doctors were not routinely testing patients for COVID-19. Now, even those with flu-like symptoms are being tested. There is no cause for panic. Citizens should practice proper hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. Our hospitals are equipped to handle any potential increase in cases,” she assured.
The rise in Pune comes shortly after a surge in Mumbai, which reported 483 cases in May. Across Maharashtra, 59 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Monday, including 20 from Mumbai, 17 from PMC limits, and two from Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Since January, Maharashtra has logged 873 COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths. The state currently has 494 active cases.
