Dahi Handi 2025: A Thrilling Tradition on a Well in Raigad — 33 Years, No Injuries, Only Celebrations

When most people think of Dahi Handi, they picture bustling city streets, crowded lanes, and human pyramids reaching for pots suspended in the air. But in a small, culturally rich village called Kuis, located in the Alibaug Taluka of Maharashtra’s Raigad district, this beloved festival takes on a whole new form — and it all happens atop a well.

For the last 33 years, the villagers of Kuis have upheld a daring and unique tradition that turns heads and draws Govinda troupes from across Maharashtra. Here, the Dahi Handi isn’t just about reaching the pot — it’s about courage, unity, and celebrating Janmashtami in a way that blends thrill with deep-rooted heritage.

The story began in 1992, when a few adventurous young men from the Deulali locality of Kuis — particularly from the Pingale, Patil, Shermakar, Thale, and Keni families — decided that the usual Dahi Handi celebration wasn’t enough. Inspired to do something original, they began the tradition of hanging the handi above a village well, turning it into a centerpiece of a spectacle no one could forget.

What started with using the branch of a custard apple tree soon evolved. Today, Govindas create human pyramids along the edge of the well, and a participant leaps from the pyramid to touch the handi suspended above. Once touched, the handi is considered broken, symbolizing success. The pot is then lowered and broken inside the well itself, completing the tradition.

What makes this Dahi Handi especially noteworthy isn’t just the location or the daring leap — it’s the incredible safety record. Despite the high-risk setup, not a single injury has been reported since the event began. This is a result of well-planned safety measures, coordination among team members, and a deep respect for the process. Once the handi is “touched,” all members of the Govinda team dive into the well — not in fear, but in celebration. It’s a moment of sheer joy, where tradition meets triumph in the most unique way.

Over the years, what began as a local celebration has grown into a statewide attraction. Govinda groups from Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and other districts now travel to Kuis to participate in or witness this iconic event. The festive spirit, the community’s hospitality, and the rare format make it a must-see for those seeking something beyond the typical city Dahi Handi.

Last year, local youth Akash Pingale set a milestone by touching the handi for the fifth consecutive year, earning respect and admiration from all who attended.

This year’s celebration is scheduled for August 16, 2025, right after the village’s traditional pooja and palkhi (procession). The main event — the handi-breaking over the well — is set to begin at 12 noon, with dozens of troupes expected to join. Organisers, led by Parag Pingale, have shared that preparations are in full swing, with excitement running high among the youth.

Additional arrangements this year include:

Enhanced safety supervision around the well.

A dedicated space for spectators.

Cultural performances and traditional music before the event begins.

The Dahi Handi celebration in Kuis is more than just a yearly event; it has become a symbol of community strength, fearlessness, and unity. In a world where festivals often turn into competitive spectacles, this tradition reminds us of the essence of celebration — to come together, take pride in one’s roots, and create memories that last a lifetime.
