Officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have provided an update on the city’s water supply, expressing cautious optimism despite inconsistent rainfall patterns. The four dams within the Khadakwasla circle currently hold a collective storage of 3.7 Thousand Million Cubic feet (TMC).

PMC sources estimate that Pune’s civic areas will require around 1.5 TMC of water until July 15. With the present dam storage, which includes a 0.5 TMC allocation for the upcoming Wari procession, officials believe there is sufficient water to meet both domestic and agricultural demands without necessitating water cuts.

Recent rains in the Ujani dam catchment areas have improved water levels there, easing the pressure on Pune for additional water supply. Although early June saw promising rainfall in Pune and its catchment regions, there has been a temporary pause in showers since then. The PMC encourages residents to continue using water wisely to maintain current supply levels.

Officials caution that if the region experiences prolonged dry weather over the next two weeks, the PMC may need to reconsider water cuts, similar to those implemented last year from May to July, which affected areas like Kharadi with alternate-day water supply.

The PMC’s strategy focuses on sustainable water management amid fluctuating weather conditions. The corporation remains vigilant, closely monitoring weather updates to make informed decisions about future water conservation measures.

While Pune currently enjoys stable water reserves, prudent usage and ongoing rainfall are critical to preventing potential shortages in the coming weeks. The PMC reassures residents of its commitment to maintaining an adequate water supply throughout the city. The decision will be taken after consulting the IMD as well as the irrigation department.
