PUNE: In a significant political shake-up, Deepak Mankar has resigned as the Pune City President of Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The move comes in the wake of an FIR filed against him over allegations of submitting forged documents related to a ₹1 crore land deal.

Mankar submitted his resignation letter to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and NCP State President Sunil Tatkare, requesting that it be accepted. The FIR, registered recently at a Pune police station, links Mankar to a land transaction involving a former NCP office-bearer who is currently in jail on rape charges.

Facing the possibility of arrest, Mankar stepped down from his party position, stating that he did so to avoid causing further embarrassment to the leadership. In his resignation letter, he defended his record, claiming to have built a jumbo executive body of over 1,500 members and enrolled nearly one lakh party workers.

He further alleged that the case was politically motivated and intended to tarnish his reputation ahead of upcoming civic polls. Mankar reiterated that no fraud had occurred on his part.

Mankar has held several key posts in the NCP since joining in 2012. The decision on his resignation now rests with Ajit Pawar.
