A Delhi woman’s social media post has ignited a heated debate over the soaring costs of domestic air travel. Khushboo Verma, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), claimed that a one-way ticket from Delhi to Bengaluru now costs Rs 8,500—an increase of Rs 5,000 compared to 2022, even when booked two weeks in advance.

“When I moved from Delhi to Bengaluru in 2022, my flight ticket cost around Rs 3,500. Today, the same route costs Rs 8,500,” Verma wrote, questioning the steep rise in fares and its impact on affordability.

Her post quickly gained traction, with many users echoing similar frustrations. One user highlighted booking a Rs 9,000 flight from Dubai to Mumbai, while another noted that fares from Jabalpur exceeded Rs 10,000 for the next two weeks. “A family of three traveling during festivals could easily spend Rs 50,000 on flights,” another user commented.

However, some defended the price hikes, citing factors like demand and inflation. One user compared current fares to 1986 rates, arguing that airfare inflation has been minimal over the decades.

Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu announced a 50% reduction in airfares for Maha Kumbh Mela travelers, starting February 1. This decision follows public outrage over ticket prices reaching up to Rs 50,000 for routes to Prayagraj, with some fares rising nearly 600% due to high demand. Airlines attribute these surges to supply-demand dynamics, but critics accuse them of profiteering during peak seasons.
