Delhi Enveloped In Haze As Air Quality Deteriorates
A thick haze engulfed Delhi over the weekend, causing air quality to plummet. Eleven out of 40 ambient air quality stations recorded “severe” pollution levels, with visibility dropping from 2,000 meters to 1,300 meters.
Anand Vihar and Vivek Vihar recorded Air Quality Index (AQI) levels of 434 and 424, respectively, both classified as “severe.” The 24-hour average AQI stood at 373, categorized as “very poor.”
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) attributes the poor air quality to unfavorable meteorological conditions, including calm winds and a dip in temperature. Private forecaster Skymet Weather predicts a slight increase in wind speed from Wednesday onwards.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) is monitoring the situation, with Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage 2 in effect. Stage 3 may be invoked if AQI touches “severe.”
To combat pollution, the “severe” category entails bans on construction, industrial operations, and mining activities.
Delhi’s AQI is expected to remain “very poor” until Wednesday. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to minimize exposure to polluted air.
