Demand Rises for Opening of Pune Flyovers; Leaders Warn of Protests Over Delay
Pune, August 19, 2025: Former MLA Mohan Joshi has urged Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram to open the completed flyovers at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk and Sinhagad Road immediately, warning of protests if the administration delays further.
In a letter to the Commissioner, Joshi pointed out that both flyovers — from Ganga Bhagyauday Chowk to Vitthalwadi on Sinhagad Road and at University Chowk — are ready for use and could provide much-needed relief to commuters facing severe traffic congestion. He said keeping them closed for political reasons is causing unnecessary hardship to citizens.
Joshi highlighted that during peak hours, motorists face traffic jams lasting up to three hours, which could worsen during the upcoming Ganesh festival. “Why should Pune citizens continue to suffer because of ceremonial delays?” he questioned.
He also alleged that the opening of these projects is being postponed to align with political events ahead of elections. If the flyovers are not thrown open to the public immediately, Joshi warned that an agitation would be launched.
Meanwhile, officials confirmed that the much-awaited flyover connecting Pune University Chowk to RBI will open on August 20, bringing relief to daily commuters.
