The Defence Estates Office (DEO) Pune has been directed by the Southern Command’s Defence Estates department to assume control of the New Club (Poona) Ltd in the cantonment area as a result of the lease expiring and non-payment of Rs 17 crores.

The club located on Rajendrasinhji Road, bungalow number 2, is well-known for holding a number of social gatherings.

“Immediate action be initiated under Public Premise Eviction Act 1971 for taking over possession of the premises and recovery of damage charges,” read the order given by Saurav Ray, Director of Defence Estates, Southern Command, Pune.

The defence estate office claims that the club management has been in charge of the property for the last five years even though the lease has expired, all while making astronomical profits from wedding venue memberships and failing to pay any taxes to the government.

The aforementioned office has been instructed to take immediate eviction measures, charge damages, file a First Information Report (FIR), and seal the property in accordance with the most recent directives.

In the meantime, the DEO moved quickly to begin the eviction process under the PPE Act and gave the club a notice.

A senior Defence Estates official said that the New Poona Club is expected to pay a fine of ₹17 crores for the management’s failure to abide by the directives that the DEO periodically issued.

Pune Pulse tried contacting the President of New Poona Club but he remained unavailable for comment during reporting.
