PMC gears up for next phase to streamline traffic on Ganeshkhind Road

As the double-decker flyover on Ganeshkhind Road nears completion, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to begin construction of a grade separator at the congested Pune University junction. The move is aimed at further decongesting one of the city’s busiest traffic hotspots.

According to PMC officials, the new infrastructure will include a 7.5-metre-wide, 440-metre-long grade separator that will allow vehicles from Shivajinagar to bypass the Pune University junction entirely and travel directly to Aundh. The structure will feature a 210-metre covered stretch and open ramps of 150 metres and 80 metres on either end.

Additionally, the plan includes a 152-metre-long connecting arm from Senapati Bapat Road to the double-decker bridge at University Chowk, with a supporting 87.5-metre-long approach road. The flyover approaches will be constructed using reinforced earth walls.

Current Scenario & Next Steps
The Pune University junction is currently experiencing severe congestion due to the ongoing Metro work and the double-decker flyover construction. However, PMC Chief Engineer Deshmukh confirmed that the grade separator work will commence only after the flyover becomes operational, allowing existing traffic to be rerouted.

“The administrative processes are already underway and should be finalised in the coming months,” Deshmukh added.

Flyover Highlights
Constructed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), the double-decker flyover stretches 1.7 km and includes:

  • two-lane ramp for vehicles traveling from Aundh and Baner towards Shivajinagar
  • three-lane flyover from Shivajinagar heading to Baner and Pashan
  • At-grade road access between Aundh, Baner, Pashan, and Senapati Bapat Road

The double-decker flyover replaces two older flyovers at the Pune University and E-Square junctions, which were demolished in 2020 to make way for this integrated project, which also supports the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro line on its upper deck. Originally scheduled for completion in 2024, delays have pushed the project into 2025, though the opening is now expected shortly.

PMC executive engineer Gaikwad, emphasized that the grade separator will be the next major step once the flyover opens, aiming to bring lasting relief to daily commuters navigating the critical Ganeshkhind Road corridor.
