Pune, December 2 : The price of drumsticks, a key ingredient in tangy sambars, soups, and spicy curries, has soared in Pune’s markets. Unpredictable weather has led to a decline in production, resulting in reduced supplies. With the onset of winter, the demand for drumsticks has spiked among households and restaurant operators, further driving up prices. In city markets, drumsticks are now selling for as high as ₹600 per kilogram, forcing consumers to buy just one or two pods at rates ranging from ₹30 to ₹60 each.

At Pune’s Gultekdi Market Yard, drumsticks are sourced from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, and nearby regions. However, erratic weather conditions have affected production. Currently, Gujarat is the primary supplier, distributing drumsticks to various parts of the country, but the supply to Pune remains limited. Besides Gujarat, Solapur district also contributes a small quantity to the market, which falls significantly short of the growing demand, causing a record surge in prices.

Under normal circumstances, Pune markets receive 4-5 tons of drumsticks daily from within and outside Maharashtra. These typically sell at ₹150-₹200 per kilogram. However, the wholesale supply has now dropped to just 700-800 kilograms per day, pushing wholesale prices to ₹350-₹400 per kilogram. Consequently, retail prices have skyrocketed to ₹600 per kilogram.

Drumstick trader from Market Yard commented, “The current supply is insufficient to meet the demand. Limited quantities are arriving from Gujarat and Solapur. In the next 15-20 days, we expect increased supply from local regions, which should stabilize prices.”

As local supplies improve, prices are anticipated to return to normal levels, offering relief to consumers.
