Pune witnessed a significant drop in drunk driving cases this New Year’s Eve, with 310 vehicle users found driving under the influence of alcohol, a 30% decrease compared to last year’s 443 cases. The police attributed this decline to the fact that New Year’s Eve fell on a Tuesday, resulting in fewer revelers on the roads .

To curb drunk driving, the police set up 25 checkpoints across the city. Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil stated  to the media that sustained action against drunk driving, enhanced checkpoints, and an early start to checks contributed to the decrease in cases. The police also took action against helmetless motorcycle riders, wrong-side drivers, and those driving dangerously and without a license .

In Pimpri Chinchwad, 225 vehicle users were found driving under the influence, a decrease from last year’s 322 cases. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Bapu Bangar said that the Pimpri Chinchwad traffic branch has been regularly taking action against drunk drivers, with over 4,000 cases taken .
