Fadnavis Government Announces 26% Power Tariff Cut for Consumers Using Under 100 UnitsÂ
Mumbai, July 17, 2025: In a major relief to citizens ahead of the municipal elections, the Fadnavis government has announced a significant reduction in electricity tariffs for small consumers. Addressing the Legislative Council during the monsoon session, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared a 26% tariff cut for domestic consumers using up to 100 units of electricity per month.
Fadnavis stated that nearly 70% of electricity consumers in Maharashtra fall under this category and will directly benefit from the decision. He assured that no increase has been proposed in any slab beyond this threshold and that tariff reductions will apply across all categories of electricity consumers.
The Chief Minister explained that under the Merit Order Dispatch system, the state has been procuring electricity from private players at competitive rates, significantly reducing power purchase costs. The increasing use of solar, wind, and battery storage solutions has further driven down expenses. Long-term 25-year agreements with suppliers will ensure tariff stability in the coming years, Fadnavis added.
Currently, Maharashtra’s average electricity tariff stands at ₹8.32 per unit, which is expected to drop to ₹7.38 per unit in the next phase. The *tariff true-up process* will also ensure that rates do not increase unexpectedly.
Addressing concerns raised by opposition leaders, Fadnavis announced that smart meters will soon be installed in the agricultural sector to monitor usage accurately. Additionally, solar-powered pumps with capacities up to 10 HP will be provided to farmers as per requirement, enabling better energy management in agriculture.
The announcement comes amid complaints of rising power bills and is seen as a major step to ease the financial burden on households and farmers.
