The Hinjawadi Police have filed charges against eight individuals, including three women, for allegedly forging documents to fraudulently sell 12 vehicles to an online pre-owned car dealership. The vehicles, which were being hypothecated to various banks for loans, were falsely presented as loan-free during the transaction. The scam came to light in August this year when discrepancies in loan clearances were discovered.

The suspects, led by a 40-year-old man from Punawale, approached the dealership with fake loan foreclosure certificates, forged No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from banks and financial institutions, and falsified documents from the Regional Transport Office (RTO), including form no. 35 required to cancel vehicle hypothecation. According to an officer from the Hinjawadi Police Station, the suspects managed to swindle Rs 96.31 lakh from the dealership in exchange for 12 vehicles. The officer revealed to the Times Of India that the fraudsters used counterfeit bank stamps to falsely claim the vehicles were free from loan obligations.

The dealership’s legal manager filed a complaint, and the suspects have been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including cheating, forgery, and criminal breach of trust. Specific charges include sections 318 (cheating), 316 (criminal breach of trust), 336, 338 (forgery), 341 (possession of counterfeit seals), and 340 (use of forged documents as genuine). While no arrests have been made yet, the investigation is ongoing.
