From a Tamil Nadu village to a ₹98 crore South Mumbai home, the Tata Group chief embodies the journey of grit, vision, and self-made success.

In the heart of Mumbai’s most elite neighbourhood, right next to Mukesh Ambani’s Antilia, lives a man whose journey began far away in a small farming family in Mohanur, Tamil Nadu. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, or “Chandra” as he is fondly called, is the Chairman of Tata Sons and one of India’s highest-paid corporate executives. His story is one of rare humility, relentless hard work, and a steady climb from modest beginnings to a home worth ₹98 crore in South Mumbai.

Born into a family that worked the fields, Chandrasekaran studied Applied Science in Coimbatore and went on to complete his MCA at NIT Trichy. He joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as an intern in 1987, rose through the ranks to become its CEO in 2009, and in 2017 was appointed Chairman of Tata Sons, a role once directly overseen by Ratan Tata himself.

In 2022, Chandra bought a plush duplex in the 33 South Tower, initially leased, now his own with sea views, private lifts, a wellness centre, and top-tier security. Yet, despite the trappings of wealth, colleagues describe him as grounded, approachable, and deeply family-oriented.

Today, his annual salary crosses ₹155 crore, and his personal wealth is estimated at around ₹855 crore. While that may pale beside Ambani or Adani, Chandrasekaran’s fortune is uniquely self-made, built not on inheritance but on four decades of corporate dedication.
