The cost of obtaining a duplicate vehicle licence has surged dramatically, with the fee increasing from Rs 258 to Rs 658—nearly tripling the previous amount. This significant hike has triggered widespread frustration among citizens, who have criticized the sharp rise in costs. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has implemented the new fee structure following an order from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The increase is attributed to a rise in the demand for duplicate licenses, which has surged in recent years. In 2024 alone, the Pimpri-Chinchwad RTO issued 6,899 duplicate licences, and in 2023, 11,527 duplicate licences were distributed.

Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar has mandated that the revised fee be applied statewide starting August. The New Pimpri-Chinchwad Motor Driving Association has expressed strong opposition to the fee increase, calling for a 50% reduction. Former association president Sunil Berge emphasized that the cost burden is particularly heavy for individuals who require duplicates due to unforeseen circumstances.

Obtaining a duplicate licence involves submitting two copies of a police report and paying the fee. The recent increase has made this process significantly more expensive, leading to complaints from the public. Rahul Jadhav, Deputy Regional Transport Officer, confirmed to a news agency that the new fee is now in effect, reflecting the growing number of duplicate licences issued.
