Pune, June 3: Newly appointed Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has announced that a comprehensive fire safety audit of all hospitals in the city will be carried out within the next 15 days. The move comes amid rising concerns over fire safety and aims to prevent potential tragedies in healthcare facilities.

Hospital fire incidents can result in major casualties. To avoid such situations, a full fire audit of all civic and private hospitals will be undertaken on priority,” Ram said during his first media interaction since taking charge on Saturday.

As per official data, Pune is home to 19 civic-run maternity homes53 OPDstwo municipal hospitals, and 870 registered private hospitals, all of which will be covered in the audit.

Focus on River Rejuvenation and Urban Infrastructure

In addition to fire safety, the PMC commissioner stressed the need to accelerate the long-pending Mula-Mutha River Rejuvenation Project. “I first heard about this project during my tenure as Pune Collector five years ago. It’s moving slowly, and I intend to fast-track it as it can transform the city’s ecology and public spaces,” he said.

He also flagged drinking water management as a pressing challenge, especially in light of growing urbanisation. “Water will become a serious concern. We must proactively manage its distribution and availability,” he noted.
