First Organ Transfer Via Metro Takes Place In Bengaluru — Know More
Bengaluru, August 2, 2025: In a pioneering move, Namma Metro successfully facilitated the transportation of a donated human liver for transplant, marking the first time Bengaluru’s metro system has been used for such a critical medical operation. This initiative makes Namma Metro only the second metro service in India to undertake organ transport, setting a new benchmark in emergency medical logistics.
The operation took place on the evening of August 1. At 8:38 PM, a specially arranged ambulance transported the liver from Vydehi Hospital to Whitefield Metro Station. The organ was accompanied by a medical team, including a doctor and seven support staff. Upon arrival, an Assistant Security Officer (ASO) and Namma Metro personnel coordinated security checks and documentation.
The liver was then swiftly moved onto a scheduled metro train, which departed Whitefield station at 8:42 PM. In less than 70 minutes, the train reached Rajarajeshwarinagar Metro Station at 9:48 PM, where another ASO and metro team ensured the safe and efficient transfer of the organ to a waiting ambulance. The liver was then delivered to Sparsh Hospital just in time for the transplant procedure.
The successful coordination between medical teams, metro authorities, and security personnel was praised by the hospital. The operation adhered strictly to the guidelines set by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MOHUA) and the Joint Procedure Order (JPO) of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
This landmark effort highlights the growing role of urban transport infrastructure in life-saving medical services. BMRCL officials expressed pride in contributing to this cause and reaffirmed their commitment to support similar efforts in the future.
