Uttarkashi, August 5, 2025: A powerful flash flood triggered by a cloudburst in the upper catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river caused widespread devastation in Dharali village, a major stop en route to Gangotri Dham, on Tuesday.
According to local police, the sudden surge in the water level of the Kheer Gadh stream in the Harsil region led to extensive damage in Dharali. Relief and rescue operations are currently being conducted by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army personnel, and local administration teams.

Disturbing visuals showed floodwaters violently sweeping through the village, demolishing homes, shops, roads, and leaving behind a trail of destruction and debris. Initial reports indicate that several hotels and homestays have been completely destroyed.
There are fears that 10 to 12 laborers may be trapped beneath the rubble, although official confirmation is awaited. In another incident, around 18 goats were washed away in the overflowing Kud Gadhera stream in the Banala Patti area of Barkot tehsil.
With heavy rains predicted to continue until August 10 across Uttarakhand, especially in the hilly areas, the India Meteorological Department has urged residents and authorities to remain on high alert. Additional rescue teams have been deployed from Harsil and Bhatwari to assist in search and evacuation efforts.
