Former home secretary Dr Madhav Godbole passes away

A multi-faceted personality, he has held several important governmental positions

Pune: The city lost one of its famous citizens, Dr. Madhav Godbole, 85, on Monday. He passed away due to cardiac failure. He was surrounded by his family members during the last moments.

During his career spanning several decades, he has chaired important government committees, including the Enron Power Project in Maharashtra, and many important portfolios. 

He has also served as principal finance secretary, Maharashtra and chairman of Maharashtra state electricity Board.

At the centre, he has held the positions of secretary, Petroleum & Natural Gas Secretary, Urban Development, besides a five-year stint with Asian Development Bank and also lived at Manila, Philippines.

Godbole completed his Master in Arts and a PhD in Economics from the University of Mumbai. He also did M.A. in Development Economics from Williams College, Massachusetts, US.

Author of 22 books, he has penned papers on several topics. He has been a regular columnist with several reputed publications. Godbole opted for voluntary retirement in March 1993 when he was the Union Home Secretary and Union Secretary, Justice.

Dr Godbole is survived by his wife Sujata, son Rahul, daughter Meera, daughter-in-law Dakshina, son-in-law Mahesh, and grandchildren Aditi, Manan, Gaayatri and Taarini.
