Four Labourers Die of Suffocation While Cleaning Underground Water Tank in Mumbai

One Worker in Stable Condition; Authorities Launch Probe
Mumbai, March 9: Four labourers lost their lives due to suffocation while cleaning an underground water tank at an under-construction building in Nagpada, Mumbai, on Sunday. One worker survived and is in stable condition, police confirmed.
Incident Details
The tragedy occurred around 11:30 AM at the under-construction building on Dimtimkar Road near Mastan Talab. Five contract workers entered the underground water tank for cleaning but lost consciousness due to lack of oxygen.
Other workers at the site immediately alerted the fire brigade. Rescuers managed to pull the trapped labourers out and rushed them to the state-run JJ Hospital, where four were declared dead on arrival. The fifth worker is recovering and in stable condition.
Victims Identified
The deceased workers have been identified as:
- Haseepal Sheikh (19 years)
- Raja Sheikh (20 years)
- Ziaullah Sheikh (36 years)
- Imandu Sheikh (38 years)
The survivor has been identified as Purhan Sheikh (31 years).
Investigation Underway
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and local police are investigating the incident. Authorities are probing possible negligence and whether safety protocols were followed at the construction site.
