Pune – A case of fraud has been registered against conmen who misused the name of late social activist Sindhutai Sapkal to deceive people by falsely claiming that girls from her Pune-based ashram were available for marriage. The fraudsters reportedly demanded money under the pretext of registration fees from potential grooms and their families.

The scam came to light after a news report revealed how the accused contacted individuals over the phone, promising to arrange marriages with girls from Sindhutai’s ashram. They reportedly demanded ₹15,000 via PhonePe or Google Pay for “registration purposes.” The incident has shocked many as it tarnishes the legacy of Sindhutai Sapkal.

Two days ago, a formal complaint was filed at the Saswad police station, but the FIR was only registered after the news went viral. The case has been registered under sections 319(4), 318(4), 356(2) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 66 of the IT Act.

Activists and concerned citizens have questioned the delay in action despite the seriousness of the fraud, especially given the deep trust associated with Sindhutai’s work. The scam has once again raised concerns about the growing desperation in society to find brides and the extent to which families are willing to go—even paying large sums without proper verification.

Citizen groups emphasized that while Sindhutai dedicated her life to serving orphans and the underprivileged, it is deeply unfortunate that such a shameful misuse of her ashram’s name has occurred. The incident also highlights the vulnerability of families who are ready to pay any amount to arrange marriages, exposing them to exploitation.

Authorities are continuing their investigation and have assured strict action against those involved.
