Mumbai | August 6, 2025
In a horrifying accident on Tuesday, a 20-year-old man sustained serious injuries after a metal rod from an under-construction metro site fell and pierced his head while he was travelling in an autorickshaw in Bhiwandi.
The victim, identified as Sonu Ali, was on the back seat of the auto when the incident occurred near Narpoli-Dhamankar Naka, along the Thane-Bhiwandi metro corridor. The metal rod fell from above, pierced through the rickshaw’s roof, and lodged in his forehead.
Visuals from the scene showed Sonu conscious but bleeding heavily, with his white shirt soaked in blood. The rod was seen penetrating at an angle through the top of the rickshaw and stuck in his head. Onlookers quickly gathered around, many filming the incident.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) issued a statement expressing deep regret. It confirmed that safety officials from the civil contractor, Afcons, and general consultant Systra-CEG-Systra India immediately rushed to the hospital to ensure that Sonu received urgent and complete medical treatment.
An investigation is expected to follow to determine the cause of the safety lapse.
