FSSAI Issues Warning Against Use of Calcium Carbide for Artificial Fruit Ripening
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a stern warning to traders, fruit handlers, and Food Business Operators (FBOs) against the use of calcium carbide for artificial fruit ripening, particularly during the mango season.
This practice, deemed hazardous, poses significant health risks and is strictly prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
In its advisory, FSSAI has urged the Food Safety Departments of States and Union Territories to be vigilant and take stringent action against violators of these regulations.
The authority’s proactive measures aim to curb the illegal practice and safeguard public health, emphasizing the importance of adhering to food safety standards and regulations.
