Traveling by train remains one of the most economical and comfortable ways to move across India. With millions boarding trains daily, Indian Railways continues to enhance passenger safety and affordability—not just through ticket fares but also through value-added services. One such underrated yet highly beneficial offering is the optional travel insurance, which provides a cover of up to Rs 10 lakh for an incredibly low premium of just 45 paise.

Yes, for less than half a rupee, passengers booking train tickets online can secure their journey with financial protection in case of accidents, injuries, or unfortunate fatalities during travel.

What Is Indian Railways Travel Insurance?

This travel insurance is a low-cost safety net offered during online ticket bookings via IRCTC—either through the website or mobile app. It ensures compensation for death, permanent or partial disability, medical expenses, and even transportation of mortal remains, should any mishap occur during the train journey.

However, this facility is not available when tickets are booked at railway counters, and it does not apply to general (unreserved) class passengers.

How To Avail It?

Opting in is simple. During the online booking process on IRCTC, passengers will see an option to include travel insurance for just Rs 0.45. Once selected, an email and SMS will be sent by the associated insurance company to the passenger’s registered contact details. This communication will include a link to fill in nominee information, which is a critical step to ensure claims can be processed easily if needed.

What Does It Cover?

The travel insurance policy kicks in from the moment a passenger boards the train and remains active until they reach their destination—including time spent during boarding and deboarding. The benefits include:

  • Rs 10 lakh in case of death or total permanent disability
  • Rs 7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability
  • Up to Rs 2 lakh for hospitalization expenses due to injuries
  • Rs 10,000 for transportation of mortal remains to the home location

The insurance provides coverage against accidents like train collisions, derailments, and other incidents that fall under Sections 123, 124, and 124A of the Railways Act, 1989. This includes terrorist attacks, robbery, riots, and even falling from the train. However, personal mishaps such as suicide or loss of personal belongings are not covered under this policy.

Who Can Get It?

The scheme is specifically available to:

  • Indian citizens
  • Passengers with confirmed or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets
  • Those booking through IRCTC online platforms

It does not apply to:

  • General class passengers
  • Children under five years
  • Foreign nationals
