Goa Fisherman Saves Life of Russian Man at Benaulim Beach
A video showcasing a local fisherman rescuing an elderly Russian man who was fighting for survival at Benaulim beach in South Goa on Tuesday is attracting significant attention throughout the coastal area.
Fisherman Francis Fernandes, known to many as Pele, is seen in a video as he promptly assists a Russian man in his late 60s who was struggling after entering the water with his female companion.
The video provides a detailed account of the remarkable rescue operation carried out by Pele on his jet ski at Benaulim Beach.
On Tuesday, he noticed an elderly Russian gentleman struggling to reach the shore due to the rip currents.
A Russian couple had chosen to enjoy a morning swim when the man encountered difficulties due to a strong undercurrent. Upon hearing their urgent cries for help, Pele and his team swiftly launched their jet ski into the water. The man faced significant obstacles in getting onto the jet ski and required assistance from both Pele and a team member before he was safely brought back to shore.
“I immediately rushed to their rescue with my jet ski. I could save him just in time. I pulled him onto my jet ski and then came back to the shore. We had seen the Russian couple venturing out into the sea for a swim. There was strong undercurrent and it is apparent that the male person appeared exhausted and struggled in the water,” Pele said when contacted in connection with the interview.
The video features Pele engaging with tourists, expressing his appreciation for them, as he acknowledges that his livelihood is supported by their presence.
Pele had offered a jet ski ride to the celebrated cricket player Sachin Tendulkar.
Pele operates a small business and a water sports activity center in Benaulim.
In February 2024, he garnered significant media attention when a video surfaced of him with Akshata Murty, the wife of former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, at Benaulim Beach. In this footage, Pele was seen advising Murty to give priority to the issues faced by Goans residing in the UK.
