The government has introduced new rules for passport applications in India, impacting both new applicants and those seeking updates. These changes aim to streamline the process and enhance security. Here’s what passport seekers need to be aware of:
1. Birth Certificate Now Mandatory for Certain Applicants
For individuals born on or after October 1, 2023, a birth certificate issued by the municipal corporation, Registrar of Births and Deaths, or an authority designated under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, will be the only accepted proof of date of birth.
For those born before this date, additional documents such as a transfer certificate, school leaving certificate, PAN card, service records (for government employees), driving license, voter ID, or LIC policy bond will also be considered valid proof.
2. Change in Residential Address Display
The last page of the passport will no longer feature the holder’s residential address. Instead, a barcode system will be introduced, allowing immigration officials to scan and access address details securely.
3. Introduction of Colour-Coded Passports
A new colour-coded system will distinguish different types of passport holders:
- White passports will be issued to government officials.
- Red passports will be assigned to diplomats.
- Blue passports will continue for ordinary citizens.
This change aims to simplify identification for authorities.
4. Parents’ Names No Longer Required
The requirement to print parents’ names on the last page of the passport will be removed. This decision prevents unnecessary disclosure of personal information, benefiting individuals from single-parent or separated households.
5. Expansion of Passport Seva Kendras
To improve accessibility, the number of Passport Seva Kendras will increase from 442 to 600 over the next five years, ensuring a smoother application and verification process.
