Green Paint Mandatory for Tankers Supplying STP Water: Pune Municipal Corporation Directive

Pune Municipal Corporation Under Fire for Approving Contractor’s Bitumen Bill Before Probe Report Submission in Alleged Scam
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced a new measure to prevent the misuse of treated sewage water from its Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). All tankers supplying STP water will now be painted green and display a clear label stating, “This is not drinking water; it is STP water.”
This decision comes after a recent incident where a private tanker supplier allegedly passed off purified sewage as potable water to a housing society in Kharadi. The PMC has initiated an investigation and is taking legal action against the supplier.
Nandkishore Jagtap, Head of the PMC Water Supply Department stated while communicating with media person that, “The tanker lobby has resorted to unethical practices to maximize profits, even selling treated sewage as drinking water. To address this issue, we have made it compulsory for all tankers supplying STP water to be painted green and labeled as non-potable water.”
The PMC processes around 450 million liters of sewage per day through its nine STPs. The treated water is typically used for construction, parks, and industrial purposes. However, the misuse of STP water has raised concerns about public health.
The introduction of green tankers is expected to create awareness among residents and industries using treated water. The PMC aims to ensure that STP water is used solely for its intended purposes and not misrepresented as drinking water.
The civic body has ordered the immediate implementation of this directive, and STP water will only be supplied to green-labeled tankers. Housing societies will also be informed of this measure to ensure compliance.
