Heavy Rains Continue in Mumbai, IMD Issues Orange Alert for the Week
Maharashtra Weather Update: Heavy Rain Forecast for Next 24 Hours in Konkan, Mumbai; Orange Alert for Pune, Satara, Kolhapur
Mumbai, July 21, 2025:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai as the city continues to receive heavy monsoon rains. The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds up to 40 km/h for the next few days.
The alert was issued on Monday morning at 9:20 AM, warning that some parts of Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to get heavy rain over the next few hours. The city was already under a Yellow Alert for July 21 to 23, and now the rain is expected to continue till Thursday, July 24.
Due to overnight rains, many parts of South Mumbai saw continuous downpours. On Monday morning, the Andheri Subway was flooded and had to be shut down. Traffic was diverted via the Gokhale Bridge, and BMC teams used pumps to clear the water. This was the second time the subway was closed this week due to flooding.
Other low-lying areas such as Sion, Chembur, Hindmata, Kurla, and Dahisar also saw waterlogging by mid-morning. Civic workers were sent to these areas, and the BMC’s disaster control rooms were made active in all 24 wards.
The IMD has warned of possible local flooding, traffic problems, and low visibility during heavy spells. Citizens have been asked to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel
- Stay away from flooded roads and underpasses
- Use raincoats or umbrellas
- Wear footwear with grip to avoid slipping
There is also a risk of power cuts due to high humidity and lightning. People are advised not to stand under trees during lightning and to unplug non-essential appliances during storms.
According to the IMD, strong monsoon winds will continue to affect the city, bringing cloudy skies and widespread rain at least until the end of the week.
