Heavy rains flood Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Vehicles move through knee-deep water near Borghat
Lonavala, July 15 – Over the past two days, heavy rains have wreaked havoc on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, particularly near the Amrutanjan Bridge area. Water accumulation from the slope below the bridge led to severe waterlogging, with depths reaching up to one and a half feet. Motorists struggled to navigate through the waterlogged section, causing many vehicles to get stuck and resulting in significant traffic blockages. Long queues of vehicles formed, an unprecedented situation for this stretch of the Expressway.
The cause of the substantial water accumulation is under investigation. The area experienced 216 mm of rain in 24 hours on Saturday, followed by an additional 140 mm on Sunday. The heavy downpour at the top of Lonavala Ghat exacerbated the situation, with water flowing down from the mountain area towards the road, creating further challenges for commuters.
