Heavy Rains Trigger Shutdown Of Govt Offices In Mumbai; BMC Urges Work From Home For Private Firms

Maharashtra Weather Update: IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert Ahead of Ganeshotsav 2025
Mumbai, August 19, 2025: With the city reeling under continuous heavy rainfall, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, announced the closure of all government and semi-government offices. The decision came after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for extremely heavy rain in Mumbai and its suburbs for the second consecutive day.
In its official statement, BMC clarified that only essential services will remain operational, while all other government, semi-government, and BMC offices will remain shut. The civic body has also appealed to private companies and establishments to permit employees to work from home to ensure safety and avoid unnecessary travel.
“Given the red alert issued by IMD, all government and semi-government offices in the BMC area will remain closed today, except for essential services. Private offices are requested to allow work from home,” the order read.
The continuous downpour has already caused widespread disruption to transport and daily life in the financial capital, with civic authorities urging citizens to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.
