Pune: Pune residents have received temporary relief from the state government’s directive mandating strict action against two-wheeler riders and pillion passengers without helmets. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar announced on Thursday that enforcement of the rule will begin on January 1, 2025, following awareness campaigns and discussions with stakeholders, including civic groups, public representatives, and traffic authorities.

The directive, issued by the Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), extends penalties to pillion riders, a significant shift from the current focus solely on drivers. Updates have already been made to e-challan machines to include provisions for penalizing pillion riders. However, initial enforcement faced opposition from several quarters, prompting the postponement of strict action until further discussions take place.

Awareness Campaigns a Priority

Pune Police Commissioner Kumar emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns to encourage helmet usage. Rising accident statistics involving helmetless riders and passengers underline the need for enforcement. Despite existing regulations, many riders continue to neglect helmet use.

The police plan to engage various community groups to spread awareness about road safety, stressing that helmets are essential for two-wheeler riders’ safety. The commissioner reiterated that discussions with stakeholders will shape the final implementation strategy, set to begin in January 2025.

Local Leaders Voice Concerns

Legislator Hemant Rasane met with the Police Commissioner to request a reconsideration of helmet enforcement in Pune. In response, Commissioner Kumar clarified that the rules aim to reduce fatalities and injuries on highways and urban roads alike, necessitating compliance for all two-wheeler riders.

This delay provides time for public education efforts to ensure smoother implementation of the mandate in the new year.
