Bharat Jain, often called the world’s richest beggar, has turned his way of life into an impressive financial achievement, owning properties and earning more than many traditional jobs.
Bharat didn’t come from a wealthy background; his family faced significant financial hardships. They struggled to afford basic necessities like food and shelter, which prevented Bharat from pursuing a formal education.
Despite these challenges, Bharat transformed his life. According to reports, he now has a net worth of ₹7.5 crore, which includes various properties and an income that could exceed that of a typical office worker. For the past 40 years, begging has been his main source of income. On average, he earns between ₹2,000 and ₹2,500 a day, depending on where he is and the generosity of those passing by. He works diligently for 10 to 12 hours each day without breaks, bringing in a monthly income of around ₹60,000 to ₹75,000.
Apart from begging, Bharat has made several wise financial choices that have enhanced his wealth. Jain owns two flats in Mumbai worth ₹1.4 crore, where he lives with his wife, two sons, father, and brother. He also has two shops in Thane that generate a rental income of ₹30,000 each month. These investments have allowed him to support his family and provide future security for his children.
Jain’s two sons, who attended a prestigious convent school, have completed their education and now help with the family business. The Jain family runs a stationery store, which adds to their income. Despite his financial stability, Jain’s family sometimes questions his decision to continue begging. However, he remains firm in his choice, saying, “I enjoy begging, and I don’t want to give it up.”
In an interview, Bharat Jain expressed, “I’m not greedy. I’m generous.” He also mentioned that he frequently visits temples and makes donations.
Jain’s experience is not one-of-a-kind. The begging industry in India is vast, estimated to be worth around ₹1.5 lakh crore. Numerous other beggars, such as Sambhaji Kale, who has a net worth of ₹1.5 crore, and Laxmi Das, with a net worth of ₹1 crore, have also accumulated significant wealth through begging.
