Mumbai: With escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Directorate of Civil Defence has issued a call for volunteers to strengthen its preparedness and response teams. The move comes after the central government directed nationwide mock drills to enhance emergency readiness.

Once rendered inactive, the Civil Defence unit has seen a revival under its current head, Prabhat Kumar, over the past few years. It now comprises over 150 salaried officials and more than 10,000 volunteers across Maharashtra, with nearly 2,500 based in Mumbai.

In a fresh appeal to bridge manpower gaps, the Civil Defence has invited public participation and has specifically reached out to the police force to enroll as volunteers and undergo emergency preparedness training. An internal circular was issued by the police department on May 13 outlining the process to join.

Additionally, the Civil Defence has urged retired police officers, family members of police personnel, and administrative staff to participate and motivate others to volunteer. Senior officers have been instructed to disseminate the information among their teams.

Established under the Civil Defence Act of 1968, the organisation plays a crucial role in managing both natural and man-made disasters. Its responsibilities include rescue and relief operations, sustaining public services, and boosting civilian morale during emergencies. The Maharashtra government is also considering introducing Civil Defence courses for engineering students to tackle the growing need for skilled responders.

The renewed call for volunteers aims to ensure a more resilient response infrastructure in times of crisis.
