HSRP Deadline Extended For Third Time: Vehicle Owners Get Relief Till August 15

Deadline Nears, But Over 1.5 Crore Vehicles In Maharashtra Still Without HSRP
The Maharashtra state government has announced a third extension for installing High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles. All vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, are now required to install HSRP plates by August 15, 2025. This is being termed as the final deadline, after which penalties will be imposed on old vehicles without HSRP plates.
Despite applying for HSRP, many vehicle owners have complained that they are not receiving the plates from authorized vendors. Considering the slow pace of fitments, the government has decided to extend the deadline once again to provide relief to vehicle owners.
Currently, there are around 2 crore old vehicles in Maharashtra. So far, HSRP plates have been installed on 23 lakh vehicles, while 40 lakh owners have completed the online process. Nearly 1.25 crore vehicles are still pending installation. Vehicles registered after April 2019 are already being equipped with HSRP by dealerships.
The delay in the manufacturing and supply of HSRP plates by certified vendors has also led to closure of several fitment centers. To address this issue, the state government has been urged to instruct manufacturers to increase production and ensure timely availability of HSRP plates.
For vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, the transport department has authorized three companies for HSRP installation. All such vehicle owners must get the plates installed from these approved vendors.
The transport department has appealed to vehicle owners to register with officially recognized HSRP providers, whose details are available on the vehicle portal. As per Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, using unauthorized number plates can attract a fine of ₹1,000.
