Panaji: BJP legislator Michael Lobo has called on the Goa Tourism Department to cancel licenses of beach shack owners who lease their businesses to individuals from outside the state. Lobo stressed that Goan beach shacks should promote local cuisine and not serve items like “idli-sambar.”

Lobo Opposes Subletting of Beach Shacks

Addressing the media, Lobo expressed concerns about non-Goans operating shacks, stating that such practices dilute Goa’s cultural and culinary identity.

“We have seen Goans subletting their shacks to people from Delhi, Bengaluru, and elsewhere. Now, we have vada pao and idli-sambar being sold at Goan beach shacks. What message are we sending to tourists?” he questioned.

Lobo argued that shacks should showcase Goan flavors such as seafood and continental dishes, which are key attractions for visitors.

Tourism Decline and Competition from Sri Lanka

The Calangute MLA also raised concerns over the decline in foreign tourist footfall in Goa, attributing it to various factors, including a shift in focus from authentic Goan experiences.

“If we do not put systems in place, Goa’s tourism sector will face dark days,” he warned, emphasizing that all stakeholders must take responsibility for the situation.

Comparing Goa to Sri Lanka, Lobo highlighted how the island nation has successfully drawn tourists away from Goa.

“Tourists who once preferred Goa are now choosing Sri Lanka, a country economically behind India but excelling in tourism,” he said.

Other Challenges: Stray Dogs and Taxi Conflicts

Lobo also raised concerns about stray dogs on Goa’s beaches, which he claimed negatively impact foreign tourists.

“Go to any beach in the world and show me stray dogs there. This is a serious issue leading to numerous dog bite cases,” he remarked.

Additionally, he pointed out the ongoing conflict between local taxi operators and ride-sharing aggregators, urging authorities to resolve the matter to enhance the tourist experience.

Demand for Strict Action

Lobo urged the tourism department to cancel licenses of beach shacks being run by outsiders, stating that there should be no compromise on local ownership.

With Goa facing increasing competition from international destinations, Lobo stressed the need for immediate reforms to preserve the state’s authentic tourism appeal and protect local businesses.
