Simple precautions can prevent your personal information from falling into the wrong hands

Smartphone upgrades have become routine, with new models launching almost every month, many users quickly sell their old phones after buying the latest device. But while selling can seem straightforward, it carries a major risk: personal data theft. Your old phone often contains sensitive information, from photos and saved passwords to banking apps and social media logins — which, if not securely removed, can be misused.

Experts caution that before handing over your old device, you must take specific steps to ensure complete data security.

Steps to Secure Your Data Before Selling an Old Phone

  1. Back Up Your Data – Before wiping the phone, save important photos, contacts, and documents to Google Drive, iCloud, or an external hard drive.
  2. Sign Out of Accounts – Log out of Google, Apple ID, WhatsApp, and all social media accounts. Don’t forget to sign out of cloud storage services like iCloud or Google Photos.
  3. Delete Saved Passwords – Many browsers and apps auto-save login details. Go into your browser’s “Saved Passwords” section and delete everything to protect your banking and email accounts.
  4. Factory Reset the Phone – Use the built-in reset option in Android or iOS to erase all data. This restores the device to its original state, making it look like new. Before you do a factory reset you should ideally remove all accounts that you are signed into. To double-check just open your Gmail app or head over to Settings>Accounts and check if there are any active Google Accounts on the device.
  5. Remove External Storage – Take out SIM cards and microSD cards before selling, as they often contain personal data.
  6. Double-Check with an Expert – If unsure, ask a trusted friend or technician to confirm that no personal information remains on the device.

By following these precautions, you can confidently sell your old phone without worrying about identity theft or data misuse.
