Pune, July 18, 2025: On a breezy morning in Magarpatta City’s Aditi Gardens, nature lovers gathered on July 12 for an immersive journey into the secrets of the natural world. Against a backdrop of rustling leaves and chirping birds, the event unfolded like a living storybook, each speaker weaving in their passion for the environment.

The Magarpatta City Environment Club holds various environment awareness initiatives for the residents as well as nature lovers.

Botanist Chintan Bhat set the tone, narrating the fascinating history of the majestic Rohtak tree. A native species revered for its medicinal properties, the tree is more than just a botanical marvel—it gave the city of Rohtak near Delhi its name. His anecdotes transported listeners to an era where trees weren’t just flora but pillars of communities.

Ecologist Vijaya Chakravarty followed with insights on the ancient wisdom surrounding bamboo. For centuries, bamboo has been a trusted material in construction, she explained, citing how the Keelnad civilization of Tamil Nadu ingeniously used bamboo packed with riverine sand to combat termites. But perhaps most striking was her revelation about bamboo’s silent warnings—when bamboo flowers, it can foretell famine. The flowering draws swarms of rodents that consume seeds and, in turn, devastate crops. “Understanding this can empower farmers to act before disaster strikes,” she said.

Then came the birds. With binoculars and a quiet sense of wonder, birding enthusiast Gen Neville Rasquinah introduced the audience to Aditi Gardens’ feathered residents: spot-billed ducks gliding across serene waters, cormorants darting for fish, and white-breasted water hens weaving through reeds.

Capturing it all were photographers Niranjan Namjoshi and Aniket Bharati, whose lenses froze the magic of the day—moments destined to inspire future generations of nature lovers.

As the gathering ended, attendees left not just with knowledge but with an awakened sense of reverence for this vibrant urban oasis and its intricate web of life.
