In October 2023, flash floods in the Teesta River caused widespread destruction in Sikkim. The disaster claimed over 100 lives, including several Indian Army personnel, and impacted more than 22,000 people, according to the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority. The floods affected residential areas, army camps, and hydropower projects across several square kilometers after a glacial lake in South Lhonak burst due to heavy rainfall.
