India Post has announced it will discontinue its iconic Registered Post service from September 1, 2025, ending a trusted mode of communication that served the nation for over five decades. The move comes as part of efforts to modernise postal operations and adapt to changing communication trends.

Launched over 50 years ago, Registered Post became a staple service used by government offices, courts, and millions of citizens — especially in rural India — to send job offer letters, legal notices, and personal communication with proof of delivery and security.

However, a sharp decline in usage led to the decision. Data shows that the number of Registered Post items dropped from 244.4 million in 2011–12 to 184.6 million in 2019–20 — a 25% fall. The rise of private courier companies and digital alternatives has significantly impacted its relevance.

From September, the features of Registered Post will be merged with India Post’s Speed Post service, which will now offer secure handling, delivery confirmation, addressee-specific delivery, and tracking as value-added services.

While the merger aims to boost efficiency and speed, concerns have been raised about affordability — especially in rural areas. Registered Post rates started at ₹25.96 plus ₹5 per 20 grams, while Speed Post begins at ₹41 for up to 50 grams, making it roughly 20–25% more expensive.

With this shift, India Post hopes to enhance its competitiveness, but for many, the closure of Registered Post marks the end of a historic era in Indian communication.
