New Delhi: Many people travel by train, but very few know all the rules made by Indian Railways—especially about when and where you can sleep during the journey.

There are clear rules about sleeping on lower and middle berths, but most passengers don’t know the rules for the upper berth. Let’s understand them in simple words.

Sleeping Time Rule:

  • Passengers are allowed to sleep on their seats only from 10 PM to 6 AM.
  • This rule applies only to middle and lower berths.
  • Upper berth passengers can sleep anytime, even during the day. No rule stops them.

Can You Sit on Someone Else’s Seat?

  • If you have an upper berth and you are sitting on the lower berth, the lower berth passenger can ask you to leave after 10 PM.
  • After 10 PM, everyone should use their own seat only.
  • You cannot sit or sleep on another person’s berth.

Rules About Luggage on Upper Berth:

  • Passengers on upper berths sometimes keep their bags with them while sleeping.
  • But this can be dangerous. Bags can fall and hurt people below.
  • That’s why only small and light bags are allowed on the upper berth while sleeping.

Important Points:

  • Having an upper berth does not give you the right to disturb others.
  • You can use your seat, but don’t trouble fellow passengers.

Quick Railway Rules:

  • Middle berth can be used for sleeping only between 10 PM to 6 AM.
  • In the daytime, middle berth should be folded so that people on the lower berth can sit.
  • If someone doesn’t follow these rules, you can politely explain or complain to the TTE (ticket checker).

These simple rules are made for the comfort and safety of all passengers. Knowing them can make your train journey better and more peaceful.
