His story of rapid rise and sudden job loss sparks empathy, advice, and calls for better job security in startups

A young Indian tech professional recently took to Reddit to share the emotional rollercoaster he experienced after seeing his annual salary jump from ₹6 lakh to a promised ₹18 lakh—only to find himself unemployed within a month. The post has since gone viral, drawing support, advice, and frustration from fellow users across the internet.

The full-stack developer, with 1.6 years of experience working in startups, explained that although his new company offered to pay him for 15 days as a goodwill gesture, he is now without a job. “It doesn’t change the fact that I’m now unexpectedly unemployed,” he wrote. “Trying to apply like a freak and getting literally no callbacks… it’s been a tough pill to swallow, going from that high to this low so quickly.”

Reflecting on his journey, the developer noted that while startups have offered immense learning opportunities, they have also exposed him to deep uncertainty. He expressed a desire to now find some measure of professional stability. “The next company I join will be my third. I’m now considering a place where I can contribute and grow for at least 2-3 years. That doesn’t mean I’ll stop grinding or upskilling, I’m always eager to learn and push myself but a bit more predictability would be welcome.”

Reaching out to the Reddit community, he asked for support: “If anyone has any leads, referrals, or just some advice on navigating this, I’d be incredibly grateful.”

The post quickly resonated with others who shared similar struggles. One user commented, “Something like this is happening to me too. I can understand your pain, bro. I suggest you post this on LinkedIn and Twitter, some HR or dev might help.” Others offered practical tips, such as thoroughly researching companies offering unusually high pay hikes, particularly in the startup space.

“Make a post on LinkedIn and mention you’re available to join immediately,” advised another. “Nice post, by the way, it didn’t feel like you were crying or something.”

Some users went a step further, criticizing the lack of accountability from employers.

“This is a bad situation. Those companies should be sued, but the government is not doing enough,” wrote one user.

As stories like this continue to surface, the incident has reignited conversations around job security in the tech sector, especially within India’s volatile startup ecosystem. While the techie’s journey took an unexpected turn, the support he’s receiving online suggests he’s far from alone—and that his resilience and transparency may yet open new doors.
