India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train, developed collaboratively by BEML and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), has been dispatched from Chennai for a loaded simulation trial. Extensive trials, including high-speed runs, will be conducted before the train’s commercial launch.

Details of the Trial According to reports, the train was initially planned for a January launch but faced delays due to trial schedules. It departed from ICF Chennai and is set to undergo trials in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. The Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) in Lucknow will oversee the trial runs.

A senior railway official confirmed that multiple trials would be conducted, with speeds reaching up to 130 km/h in the Jhansi Division and 180 km/h in the Kota Division.

What is Loaded Simulation? Loaded simulation tests assess a train’s performance under varying conditions, such as different loads, track types, and weather scenarios. These trials help operators understand operational limits and ensure safe functioning.

Some examples of loaded simulation in railways include:

  • Load simulation for traction motors: Evaluates motor features and propulsion systems without actual vehicle testing.
  • Simulation of daily load curves: Creates movement graphs for traction substations in electric railways.
  • Modelling of long-term train loads: Analyzes the impact of train loads on track soil using computer simulations.
  • Deadlock prevention: Utilizes past simulation data to enhance rail signal systems and prevent operational deadlocks.

What is the Vande Bharat Sleeper? The Vande Bharat Sleeper train is a new variant of the Vande Bharat chair car series. Designed for overnight travel, it aims to provide superior comfort compared to the Rajdhani Express trains. It will have a top speed of 160 km/h and promises a higher average speed for enhanced connectivity.

Features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train The train includes 16 coaches with the following configuration:

  • 11 AC 3-Tier Berths (611 berths)
  • 4 AC 2-Tier Berths (188 berths)
  • 1 First Class AC Berth (24 berths)

In total, the train can accommodate 823 passengers, offering an efficient and comfortable travel experience for long-distance journeys.

The introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper variant marks a significant milestone in Indian Railways’ efforts to modernize and revolutionize train travel.
