India’s Richest and Poorest States by Per Capita Income Revealed
Latest FinMin data reveals massive income gap between richest and poorest states
India’s richest state in terms of per capita income is Goa, while Bihar has emerged as the poorest, according to the latest data presented by the Finance Ministry in the Lok Sabha. The figures, based on provisional GDP estimates for 2023–24 by the National Statistical Office (MoSPI), paint a stark picture of income disparity across Indian states.
Goa topped the chart with a per capita Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) of ₹3.57 lakh, followed by Sikkim at ₹2.92 lakh. Union Territories like Delhi (₹2.71 lakh), Chandigarh (₹2.56 lakh), and Puducherry (₹1.45 lakh) also featured among the top five.
On the other end of the spectrum, Bihar registered the lowest per capita income at ₹32,227. It was followed by Uttar Pradesh (₹50,341) and Jharkhand (₹65,062), underlining the economic challenges faced by India’s most populous and resource-rich, yet underdeveloped, states.
The sharp divide was highlighted in response to a parliamentary query by MPs Giridhari Yadav and Dinesh Chandra Yadav. Minister Pankaj Chaudhary acknowledged a rise in overall national income but noted the growing regional disparities. “The per capita net national income at constant prices for 2024–25 stands at ₹1,14,710, up from ₹72,805 in 2014–15,” he said.
Chaudhary attributed the uneven growth to “varying levels of economic development, sectoral composition, structural disparities, and governance mechanisms” across states. The data underscores the urgent need for balanced growth policies to bridge the widening gap and ensure inclusive development across all regions.
