Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, April 7, 2025: An IndiGo flight travelling from Mumbai to Varanasi was forced to make an emergency landing at Chikalthana Airport in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Sunday night after an elderly woman passenger died onboard. The passenger, identified as 89-year-old Sushila Devi from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, reportedly began feeling unwell mid-air shortly after takeoff from Mumbai. According to airport authorities, the crew alerted the ground team, and the flight was diverted to Chikalthana Airport due to the medical emergency.
The flight landed at approximately 10:00 PM, where a medical team was immediately dispatched to examine the unwell passenger. However, doctors confirmed that Sushila Devi had passed away before the flight could land.
Police from the MIDC CIDCO station carried out all necessary legal procedures, after which the flight resumed its journey to Varanasi. IndiGo Airlines confirmed the incident and stated that the deceased passenger’s body was handed over to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
The airline expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and said full cooperation was extended to the authorities involved.
The unfortunate incident has raised concerns about managing medical emergencies during flights, especially for elderly or vulnerable passengers.
