Investor Raises Concerns Over High Salary Demands for Grooms in Arranged Marriages
In a thought-provoking commentary on the evolving dynamics of marriage expectations, an investor has raised concerns about the increasingly high salary demands placed on grooms by prospective brides and their families.
An investor took to the microblogging platform X, igniting a lively discussion on social media about the rising salary expectations for grooms in arranged marriages, especially in the IT industry. The post raised concerns about the expectations placed on young professionals and the attitudes of parents when establishing financial requirements for potential partners.
“Salary expectations of grooms during wedding matches are insane. Less than 1 lakh per month are not even being considered if the person is in IT. The mindset of parents needs a RESET. How can a 28-year-old earn 1-2 lakh, have their own car and a house? Your generation had all these for retirement,” the investor wrote, leading to extensive conversation.
Social media users chimed in on the topic, with one remarking, “Living in India has become quite expensive these days. Medical bills, rising electricity costs, property, and house maintenance. If you look at the data, someone earning Rs. 25,000 is in the top 10% of earners.”
Another user commented, “I’m not sure what percentage of people earn 1 lakh per month in hand. The unfortunate part is that with layoffs and automation, many are already feeling anxious. The shaadi business is just adding another headache to the mix with these expectations.”
Last year, a woman’s post detailing her criteria for a potential groom went viral. The post included her personal information, such as salary, profession, and marital status, along with a list of expectations for her “future husband,” which notably included a ₹30 LPA salary and a 3BHK, among other criteria.
In a different situation, a man posted on X stating that one of his friends faced rejection in an arranged marriage due to his income. According to the user on X, a woman declined to accept the man’s engineer friend, mentioning that his salary was inadequate.
The post stated, “The reason for rejection is that the boy’s salary package is less, and the girl’s family wants a minimum 25 LPA package.”
