Dharamshala blackout halts PBKS vs DC clash; fate of remaining matches hangs in the balance

Dharamshala, May 9: The 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been thrown into uncertainty following escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. On Thursday night, the high-profile clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala was suspended midway due to a regional blackout caused by air raid alerts in nearby areas.

The match, which had reached 10.2 overs, was abruptly halted after Pakistani drones and missiles reportedly targeted military installations in Jammu and along the western border. India’s air defence system successfully thwarted the attacks, but not without triggering widespread emergency protocols across Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

Evacuation Underway for Teams

In response to the escalating security concerns, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has arranged a special train to evacuate players and staff of both PBKS and DC to Delhi. The decision prioritises player and spectator safety amid increasing regional instability.

BCCI Reviewing IPL 2025 Schedule

With 58 of the 74 matches in IPL 2025 already completed, 16 fixtures—including the playoffs and final—remain. However, the BCCI is reportedly deliberating multiple options for the remainder of the season. These include:

  • Postponement of upcoming fixtures until the situation stabilises
  • Relocation of remaining matches to a neutral venue, potentially the UAE
  • Cancellation of the rest of the tournament if threats escalate

“No final decision has been made yet,” BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla told The Indian Express. “We are monitoring the situation, seeking the government’s advice, and will take a call accordingly.”

IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal echoed the same, stating, “It’s an evolving situation. No directive from the government has been received yet. We will consider all logistics before deciding.”

Tonight’s Match Still On Schedule

Despite last night’s disruption, Match 59 between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Lucknow is expected to proceed as scheduled. No official announcement of cancellation or rescheduling has been issued as of Friday morning.

The coming hours are crucial for the future of IPL 2025, with the BCCI expected to announce a formal decision soon.
