ITMS Records Over 8.5 Lakh Violations, Revolutionizing Road Safety on Atal Setu and Mumbai-Pune Expressway
The Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) has recorded over 8.5 lakh violations and 12.3 lakh e-challans have been issued with speeding accounting for 70% of them, informed a transport official.
ITMS is active on Atal Setu, which connects Sewri in Mumbai to Ulwe in Navi Mumbai and is already active on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The system aims to improve road safety and traffic management using AI-enabled CCTV cameras and real-time monitoring.
The official said that ITMS is highly effective in identifying traffic violations on Atal Setu, where the speed limit is set at 100 km/h. The system primarily focuses on detecting three key offenses on the bridge: speeding, lane cutting, and illegal parking. On the Pune Expressway, ITMS has proven its efficiency by monitoring 17 different violations, showcasing its role in improving road safety and traffic management.
With an average daily traffic volume of 40,000 vehicles, surging to 60,000 on weekends, the expressway is a vital transport corridor. ITMS ensures swift action against violators by issuing e-challans automatically via mobile phones once the journey is completed. The system applies to all private and public transport vehicles, including BEST and NMMT buses.
A key feature of ITMS is its automatic number plate recognition, which enhances enforcement efficiency. It also helps monitor and analyze real-time traffic conditions using sensors and cameras. The system improves response times by promptly detecting and reporting disabled vehicles to the control room, reducing congestion.
Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government plans to extend ITMS to other key routes, including the Samruddhi Mahamarg, said a senior transport official. This expansion reflects the government’s commitment to using technology for better road safety and efficient traffic management.
